Introduction to the Upward Bound Summer Academy

The Upward Bound Summer Academy is a unique, 6-week program at Colorado Mesa University that simulates the college-going experience for participants. This program is free of charge, with no financial obligation for families.

Program Details

Academic Session

The Academic Session takes place from June 8 to July 10. During this period, students receive supplemental instruction in math, English, science, and foreign language from teachers passionate about working with first-generation students.

Residential Session

The Residential Session occurs from July 13 to July 17, offering students a week of on-campus living paired with experiential and hands-on learning with teachers, CMU employees, and community members.

Expectations and Eligibility

• Participants are expected to commit to all 6 weeks of the program, showing up to all portions, completing assigned homework, and passing all classes.
• By applying, students agree to:
  • Actively participate in all planned activities with enthusiasm.
  • Show respect to all staff and participants.
  • Be prepared and turn in assignments on-time.
  • Attend daily for all six weeks.
  • Be a positive representative of the Upward Bound team.
• Students with a D or F grade at the end of the school year are ineligible to participate.
• Graduated seniors are not eligible to participate.

What Students Can Expect

• 5 weeks of supplemental instruction in core subjects.
• 1 week of on-campus living with experiential learning.
• Daily mentorship with CMU Upward Bound tutors and advisors.
• Buffet-style meals provided daily.

Outcome

Successful completion of the six-week Summer Academy results in students earning 0.5 elective credits toward their high school degree.
